Born in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz, (Carmen Charo for many people), I got my BSc in Biology at the University of Seville in June, 1991. I obtained my Ph.D at the same University in September, 1996 (Friday 13th!), in the Departament of Genetics under the supervision of Prof. Josep Casadesús, on the molecular analysis of IS200, an insertion element of Salmonellae. After getting my Ph.D, I continued working in this group until December, 1997.

In January, 1998, I joined the group led by Prof.. David W. Holden at the Department of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London (UK). Funded by an EMBO Long-term Research Fellowship until January 2000, I continued within the group until 2002 as Research Associate funded by a the Medical Research Council (MRC) until I came back to Spain. During this period, the group joined the newly created Centre for Molecular Microbiology and Infection. My work throughout my stay at David’s group focused on the functional analysis of a type III secretion system from Salmonella typhimurium, SPI-2.

Currently, I am a group leader at the Genetics Unit of the Department of Cellular Biology, Genetics and Physiology at the University of Málaga, where I lead a research team working on the functional characterisation of the type III secretion system of Pseudomonas syringae.
